A flying insect circus in amber

Insects in Amber: Alates (Order Isoptera - termites), Wasp (Order Hymenoptera, Family Braconidae); Planthopper (Order Homoptera, Family Achilidae), Flies, Gnats (Order Diptera)
Pliocene to Pleistocene
Andes Mountains, Colombia

The Alates (Flying Termites) have 100 mm wing spans. Such flying termites are the sexual forms that swarm to form new colonies, the swarm overwhelming potential predators by shear numbers. There is also an 8 mm Planthopper, several flies and gnats, including a dark-winged fungus gnat and a sand fly. A most unusual inclusion is a male braconid wasp with long ovipositor used for mating.
